EU Border Checks 2026: What Nigerian Travelers Need to Know Before Traveling to Europe

Nigerians planning to travel to Europe should prepare for potentially longer waits at some European borders as the European Union continues the rollout of its new Entry/Exit System (EES).

The system introduces digital registration and biometric checks for eligible non-EU travelers entering and leaving the 29 European countries participating in the EES. The system records travelers’ passport information, facial image, fingerprints and entry and exit information, replacing the traditional manual passport-stamping process for travelers covered by the system.

Recent developments have renewed concerns about queues at some European airports and border crossings, particularly following the end of a temporary flexibility period that allowed authorities to suspend or relax EES checks when congestion became severe.
